I will admit that today, I just needed a perk. Something fun and feel good. So I headed over to YouTube to check in with one of my favorite YouTube bands, Pomplamoose. There is much to love about Pomplamoose. I was thrilled to see a new video – a little compilation with Ben Folds and Nick Horby:

Here is one of my all time Pomplamoose favorites:

This is in honor of September. My favorite month.

I feel better. But this post is really about you. What is your favorite YouTube Band/Artist. Be sure to leave a link in the comments!

Have a great Wednesday!

Oh Snap! The Self Portrait Evolves

by Brian on August 31, 2010

We’ve all done it at one time or another; used our camera or phone to snap a self portrait for something.  Back in the MySpace days, I would often use the look up at the camera pose.  While a classic, it can get a bit boring.  I’d like to think self portrait taking has evolved a little bit.  (Hey, at least I never did the scary kissy face thing!)

Self portraits have really evolved.  The New York Times Style page recently had an article about the new self portrait.  I tried to locate it so I could share it with you, but was unsuccessful.  The point is that self photography has moved on from the old days of cameras with film.  Now that we’ve gone digital it is oh so much easier to get creative and get a good photo.  Or, I can at least not care if the photo does not turn out well, it is really easy to hit delete.

Now, for those of you with smartphones there are plenty of apps that will let you kick it up a bit when trying to capture your essence on the digital canvas.  Here are some of my favorites (in no particular order).

Gorillacam: This iPhone app has one very very very handy feature.  It lets you take a picture by touching anywhere on the screen.  For those of you who have tried to snap a self portrait by hitting the little camera button, you know how much easier this is.  It also has a level to make sure that your pictures aren’t a bit askew.  Unless that’s what you’re hoping to achieve.  Then askew away I say!

PS Express: Here we have a very handy little Photoshop™ application that allows you to do some basic editing on the fly.    You can crop, tint,  make black and white or add all sorts of effects to photazzle your picture.  I’m a fan of black and white myself, so I tend to use that feature quite a lot.

Pop Art Lite: Are you a pop art fan?  This is a great app that lets you pop art any photo.  How cool is that?  It’s ice cold it’s so cool.

Polarize: This one is useless but so much fun.  It makes your portraits go all old school funk by turning them in to Polaroid™ style photos.  You can even tag the bottom with something witty to share with your friends. For those of you who don’t know Polaroid (or other instant camera makers), here is a little link to help you out!

There you have a few of my favorite ways to make a self portrait look not so self portrait-y.   It only takes a few minutes and some ingenuity, and people will look at my Facebook account or Twitter page and wonder how I got so crazy creative.

What are some of your favorite ways or tools to shake up  a self portrait?

P.S. I would like to add that I paid absolutely nothing for these apps.  How’s that for a bargain?

Top 10 Ways I Save Money

by Kristin on August 30, 2010

  1. As an avid reader I could very easily transfer my entire paycheck to Borders and gorge myself on all of their lovely books.  Instead of doing that, however, I have found that incredible things can be found at the local library.  I’m about to embark on my senior year of college and was able to save myself over $300 by finding 5 of my 8 required books for free at the Eugene Library!  I went on-line, looked them up, put them on hold and they are ready and waiting for me, completely free of charge!  They also have an enormous DVD and CD collection that you can check out for absolutely no cost.  It’s a magical place.
  2. My boyfriend and I were evaluating our bills recently and we decided to experiment with our garbage service.  We are both chronic recyclers so he called and asked if we could switch to a monthly pick up instead of weekly.  Turns out doing that will save us nearly $20 a month as a financial reward for all of our recycling and composting!
  3. Entertainment is expensive, but also necessary.  Instead of paying upwards of $100 a month on cable or satellite, we opted for Netflix in our house.  Since we have a PS3, we are able to stream literally countless movies and TV Shows right into our living room.  We pay $8.99 a month for this service in addition to the movies they mail to us and I have found it to be an excellent substitution for the expensive cable options.
  4. Food is an expensive necessity in life.  It costs a lot, tastes great and keeps us living healthy.  Since the foods I am allergic to are incredibly common, I have been forced to learn how to cook things for myself and it has been incredible!  Cooking for yourself is a huge way to save money as eating out is so incredibly expensive.  I can make two organic pizzas that are just as good as one you would buy from a parlor, only mine will cost me $6 instead of $25.
  5. When trying to save money, a very important decision is where to keep your money.  I may be biased here, but you should always choose a credit union.  You don’t have to choose Northwest Community Credit Union by any means, but please choose one.  Credit Unions aren’t prone to charging exorbitant fees or making things harder for you with higher rates and annual costs.  A local credit union is a human experience and that is exactly what you get when you work with one…you get a person.  Five years ago I had always used a bank and now I can’t help but shake my head at all the money I wasted on their multitude of fees.
  6. Buy used.  I donate anything I can to Goodwill and when searching for the things I may need, I always try to go used before new.  Not only will this save you money, but it keeps all of the stuff in this world out of a landfill and serving a purpose.
  7. An amazing way to save money is by utilizing coupons in the paper or subscribing to a coupon site, as Brian so beautifully pointed out here.  You can save a bundle and it can help you plan your weekly meals by showing you what is on sale.  I get the Market of Choice emails that show me what is on special that week and then tailor my shopping around that.  It saves me money and adds variety to my dinners and lunches.
  8. Re-evaluate your cart.  When I go somewhere like Target I tend to put quite a few things in my shopping cart.  A set of towels, a new movie, some mascara, dog treats, sheets, gardening tools, you name it and I have it.  Before I go to checkout I stop and look at everything in my cart and decide if I really need and/or want it after all.  There is never a time when I don’t put back at least one item after this careful inspection.  I have even ended up abandoning the whole thing before when I realized I was just buying stuff for fun out of boredom.  Boredom can be very expensive, which is why I am such a good library patron.
  9. Buy and cook in bulk.  This doesn’t apply to everything of course, I mean what would you do with 30 pounds of carrots?  Certain items are great to buy in bulk, however, and we head to Costco at least once a month to get them.  Organic brown rice for instance is a million times cheaper in bulk and it doesn’t go bad.  We also buy cat and dog food, laundry soap and garbage bags from Costco along with a few other goodies.  When cooking certain things, you can also do this in a huge batch and then freeze it.  We do this with soups and the pizza sauce I mentioned earlier and they are delicious.
  10. Finally, I spend a lot of time sharing with my friends and family.  We have meals together a lot where everyone brings something and then no one is out any great expense.  You can have game nights, wine tastings, movie nights, etc and everything will cost less because it is split several ways.  Not only do you get to spend time with the people you love, but your wallet doesn’t break under the pressure of a fancy restaurant or trendy bar.  This is my favorite way to save money by far!

Eugene Celebration Event Map 2010

UPDATE: The weekend pass giveaway is closed. Bill Randall and Jessica Adams have each won 2 weekend passes to the Eugene Celebration thanks to Northwest Community Credit Union. Have fun!

The Eugene Celebration August 27 – 29, 2010 is just one sleep away! I’m so excited. This is the first year in quite some time that the Celebration does not fall on my birthday weekend (Labor Day weekend) so I actually get to attend instead of being out of town. This year as you may know, the theme is Raise the Roof. Go here for more deets on Raise the Roof. Northwest Community Credit Union is the presenting sponsor for the Eugene Celebration so we will be there in force.

Starting tonight.

Tweet Up!

We are hosting a Tweet Up for some pre-Celebration fun at Adam’s Sustainable Table from 5:30 – 7pm. Adam is offering $1 pork sliders and $5 Peachy Oregon Iced Tea (with Vodka). We will be giving away fabulous gifts and prizes including weekend passes to the Eugene Celebration. The extra slimy Slug Queen Jerril Nilson and her Court will join us at the Tweet Up around 6:30.

We are at the Gates

As you come and go to the EC, be sure to say “Howdy” to our Northwest Community staff powering the entrance gates. Yep, we are staffing each gate North, South, East and West for the entire Celebration.

In the Parade

The EC parade always brings the wild and wacky to life. We are float #45 in the Celebration Parade on Saturday morning. The parade starts at 10am from 11th and Pearl Streets. Our own Helen Byrnes, CEO of Northwest Community will be at the front of the parade walking with Senator Merkley. AND – the Famous Bike Blender will be blending up smoothie goodness on our float and sharing with parade attendees. Click here to see the parade route. Be sure to plan for extra time to park – or ride your bike instead!

At KidZone

This year, the Northwest Community Bike Blender will make an appearance in KidZone Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00pm. Bring the kids by to power up the blender and make their own smoothie. While I’ve been sworn to secrecy about the smoothie recipe, I can assure you we use only the best, all natural ingredients.

Shed Build for Raise the Roof

To support our fund raising efforts for Raise the Roof, (where we build 2 Habitat for Humanity houses in our area in the next 3 years in partnership with the Eugene Celebration) we are hosting a shed build from 12-6pm Saturday and Sunday and then raffling off the shed. The shed will be built by local business partners. Stop by the build site at 10th and Olive to watch the progress and purchase $5 raffle tickets for a chance to win the shed.

It’s Never too Early to Start Saving Money

I got my first job when I was 6 years old.  I was in charge of making sure our dog was fed and hydrated every morning.  For this I got $5 every week.  My mom asked me if I wanted to save my money or if I wanted it to spend.  My 6 year old [...]

Talking Trash

August 20, 2010

I spent last Saturday volunteering in the blazing heat for Project Community.  I was team leader for a very important job; I was on trash patrol.  Yes, I was sporting an orange vest and carrying a bucket and big pick up stick.  I’d like to think I rock the orange vest myself, but I’m guessing [...]

A handful of nights ago the skies were bright and clear for the annual Perseid meteor shower.  I wrote about this last year (here) so I won’t bore you with the details of this amazing spectacle again, I promise.  I did stumble across a video that photographer Henry Jun Wah Lee managed to capture using time-lapse [...]
