Feed Your iPod on the Cheap

Ok, so you've got this shiny new iPod or other mp3 player with a ton of storage space, but how do you fill it up without breaking the piggy bank (or the law)? Well, here are some great places to find cheap or even free music to expand your library.

iTunes: If you have an iPod, you have to use iTunes simply to manage everything anyway. Well, Apple is always giving away free music. Every week they have a new set of songs to give away that cost you a cool nothing. In addition, they are often giving away free television shows, so if you have video capabilities on your iPod, even more stuff to put on there! For those of you with an iPhone or an iPod Touch, download the free apps iheartradio, Slacker and Pandora (see Kristin’s awesome post on Pandora) for free streaming radio. While not quite the same as owning some free music, it still exposes you to some new musical feasts.

Amazon: A relative latecomer to the digital music scene, amazon.com is determined to catch up. They currently have about 500 free songs available. They may not all be to your tastes, but hopefully there is something that catches your eye.  Or better yet, your ear. Plus, they often have music on sale so you can score it for cheaper than iTunes.

eMusic: They give you anywhere from 25 to 75 free songs just for signing up for a trial membership. After you gorge yourself on the free music, you can continue a very reasonably priced membership and get a ton of indie music. I found a great Bollywood remix compilation as well as some hard to find Euro music.  I’ve also found some more classic (80’s) music on there for some tasty variety.

Randomness:  Sometimes you just get lucky and artists are giving away music as a promo.  I recently scored a free mp3 of the “Major Tom'” remake by Shiny Toy Guns.  Yes, it is that version featured in the Lincoln MKZ commercial.  I went on a frantic search for that song on iTunes and amazon.com, but could not find it.  However, as an advertising ploy, it was being given away for FREE.  Sign me up for that!

So, those are some of my favorites.  Where do you get your free and legal music?

I had no idea that iTunes gave away free music! Totally know what I'm doing tonight!! :) Thanks for the tips, you music guru, you!

Also, if you are at Starbucks, pick up the free music card that they have. It gives you even more FREE iTunes music. Always glad to help, Holli. :)

Ooh, yes, I am a huge fan of the free iTunes music from Starbucks! :) That's how I was introduced to the ever fabulous Duffy!

Me too!

I actually have about 150 CDs from back in the day....putting all of them onto my computer has put DAYS worth of music on there and I am never bored. Then I occasionally buy something new when I feel like all of my music is from 10+ years ago!

Tiffany, doing that is like the ultimate in recycling! Any favorites you would like to recommend?

Like Tiffany I like to load the CDs I have at home (but rarely pop in the player and listen to them). It means I keep using them! Since garage sale season is starting I will freshen up my music by saving some older tunes from garbage bin. I also like to sell to and buy from CD world when things are getting stale.

Good point, Kari. Garage sales and sale bins are a great way to expand your musical selection without making your wallet hurt. Here in Portland, I like to go to Everyday Music and see what they have in the bins. I have found some great stuff and some great guilty pleasure music (that I will NEVER admit to owning).

Amazon will often give you free download credits if you've ordered other items from their site - I order from there quite a bit so it's a fabulous bonus! (And watch for their entire album for $5 sales!)

I didn't know about the credits! I have taken advantage of the $5 album before though. don't laugh, but I got "Once More With Feeling" (the Buffy musical episode) and I was pretty happy about that. I will keep my eyes out for the download credits, that is awesome sauce!
