You may have heard, I am trying to watch what I spend. However, I still like to get out and about and have some fun. I know, hard to believe. A while back, the NY Times did this great piece on frugal fun in P-Town, and I even bookmarked it for future visits. I realized that by not sharing with everyone, I was being a greedy goose.
So, in the spirit of this frugal Portland party time and the whole sharing-is-caring theme, I wanted to offer up some of my own frugal Portland destinations/events/happenings/to dos.
1. First Thursday: What a great way to pre-funk for the weekend. Go out for a tour of art galleries with friends. While not necessarily a high octane evening, it is still a great way to spend an evening out on the town and raising your cultural status.
2. Go for a hike: Forest Park in Portland is a great place to go for a day hike while not leaving the city. With over 50 miles of trails, you can spend a lot of quality time with nature without breaking the bank. Even with the descent into fall it is still an incredible place to be. (And a great place to plant trees in the winter!)
3. Movies: Portland has scads of second run movie theaters. For a couple of dollars, you can check out a movie at some really great movie theaters. My personal fave is the Bagdad Theater on Hawthorne. (PS If you are of legal age, you can enjoy a delicious adult beverage with your movie. Ding dong.)
4.Saturday Market/Tom McCall Waterfront Park: With the holiday season quickly approaching and my need to buy unique gifts coming to the forefront, I like to head down to the waterfront for some Saturday Market action. I don’t have to buy, but it a ton of fun to people watch and enjoy the bazillion colors of those oh so crafty artists. I can pick up some delicious food from a street vendor (like a tasty falafel) and take it on over to the waterfront park nearby. On those really ambitious days, I even bike it there. Now that’s very Portland.
5. Pick a neighborhood: Portland has some really amazing little neighborhoods. Sometimes I will randomly pick a neighborhood and go wandering around to see what’s new and fresh. Of course, there’s the Pearl. But, there are some other really fantastic neighborhoods. Mississippi has really exploded onto the scene, but I still love the more laid back approach of Hawthorne. Sellwood/Westmoreland is my favorite neighborhood, but I admit to being biased. That’s where I live. But, it does have a really cool roller rink, great restaurants and it is right by the river. Walking is still free, and you can buy a cup of coffee and still not spend much money. And, if you ride public transportation, you don’t have to pay for gas or parking!
So those are some of my favorites, what are your favorite local frugal destinations/events/happenings? (Maybe Jen can help me find a phrase for that.)
