Don’t Scare Your Budget!

It’s pretty much a given that we’ve all had to tighten our belts and watch what we spend a little (or a lot) closer!  With the holidays fast approaching, we need to save when and where we can.

Why not start with Halloween?  Have fun with your costume, think outside the box and let your creative juices flow!  Some of the easiest and best costumes come from items you already own or can obtain for very little money.

Jelly Belly Costume

Items Needed: Clear garbage bag, small colored balloons, thick red ribbon, Jelly Belly logo printed off the their website

My nephew did this as his costume several years ago and I’m still talking about it!  The costume was so easy to make!  Cut hole for your waist- careful to keep it fairly snug.  Fill the bag with different colored balloons (blown up), cut two holes for your arms and another for your neck.  Synch the bag around your neck with the ribbon- keeping it comfortably loose.  Tape the Jelly Belly logo to the front of your costume and you’re good to go!

The 80’s Prom Queen

Items Needed: Gaudy, bright dress, high heels, crown, costume jewelry, makeup

Okay, so this could be the easiest costume ever.  You’ve most likely been a bridesmaid in a wedding or still have one of your old prom dresses.  It was a hot mess of bright colored satin and taffeta then, it hasn’t improved with age.  Pull that baby and let the fun begin!  If all else fails, check out your local Goodwill- they surely have something that will work!  If you have a group of girlfriends and willing guys, you could always have the entire prom court, complete with sashes!

Tree Air Freshener

Items Needed: Two large pieces of cardboard, spray paint, white acrylic paint, string or ribbon (You may want to purchase one of the tree air freshener’s for inspiration)

Cut out two identical tree shapes from the cardboard.  Spray paint both sides on each tree, you can pick any color of scent to be.  With the white paint, write out the flavor of tree you are.  Attach the two pieces of cardboard with the string or ribbon, this will rest on your shoulders- be sure to make adjustments so that the top of the tree doesn’t hit you in the face.  Keep in mind, this isn’t the easiest costume to sit in.

Glow Stick Figure

Items Needed: Glow Sticks, black clothing, needle, thread

Just sew these bad boys to your clothes and you have an instant costume that will have everyone talking!  But be careful!  The glow sticks only last for a limited time, one wrong move and you’ll be replacing sticks!  To really make it work, you have to be in the dark- so it’s perfect for trick-or-treating!

Here’s a little video on what the Glow Stick Figure looks like!  Enjoy!

What are you going to be this year?  Please tell us!

What great ideas! Thanks for sharing. I was wondering what do do for next year (you can never plan too early) and now you've given me food for thought.
