I have a crush… on you.

My name is Holli and I am a serial dater. Okay, not really. In real life I am serial monogamist who has been blissfully married for ten years- but as an author, I am as fickle as they come. I’ve been known to move from book to book with no remorse, not even a glance at the mess I’ve left behind. That is until about a month ago, when I developed the biggest infatuation with a storyline. Now I am crushing on my novel like no other. It may seem crazy, but most writers will tell you that writing a novel is much like being in a relationship. The highs, the lows, the excitement, the heartache… You walk a fine line between love and hate on a daily basis. How so? Keep reading…

I met the most amazing book today. I know, I know, that’s what I always say, but this one’s really different. I like to think that I’m a good judge of character, and let me tell you, this one’s a keeper. We understood each other right away, we were totally on the same page and this book has a well thought-out future. I can’t say that about all of my previous books.

Did I tell you how clever this book is? Very clever.

We sat for a few hours today, you know, to get to know each other better. The time just flew by- it was amazing! I’ve never felt so connected to a new book so fast! You know how sometimes it’s forced and awkward when you first meet, well, we didn’t have that at all! It was so easy to be there, in the moment, taking it all in.

This book really is quite adorable! You’ll just have to see it for yourself, but I think you’ll agree. I know it’s early, but, what if this is the one? Oh, I shouldn’t get ahead of myself! I mean, I just met this book- it could turn out to be a serial killer, or a know it all, the do-it-yourself type, or could it be Prince Charming?

My books name? Oh, well, actually, we didn’t get that far. No, something unexpected came up for my book and I was running late for an appointment, so we had to part ways abruptly- but we promised we would meet up again tomorrow. So, tomorrow should be great. I just hope my book shows up.

Sweet! I remember you starting a book a couple years ago that was pretty fun. Can't wait to hear more about it!

Now remember, your book could be written on the back of napkins - maybe in idea form like J K Rowling? Or how about the insides to a cereal box for the serial killer genre? It will be exciting to hear how you create your book. Outline first? Chapter by Chapter? By pencil or pen, on a computer or typewriter - what is your favorite way to write? Hm, this could be the how to write a book, book.

Thanks Jason! I remember that, too. As I said above, I've been known to move from book to book. :) It's no lie. My current venture is totally different- I can't put it into words, but it just feels different. :) In a good way!! Thanks for the comment!!

Haha! Bonnie, very true, this could quickly turn into a manual of sorts! :) The image above is actually my stuff- my how-to book I'm reading, my first chapter, my character journal- which includes bios, clothing ideas I found in magazines, quotes that made me think of them or that I want them to say, etc. I also have a very basic outline of what I intend to write, but I like for my characters to come alive and let them grow- as I write. I know the direction I want them to go, but how they get there is sometimes spur of the moment. :) I work in sequence, chapter by chapter and I write when Iim inspired- either at my computer or by putting pen to paper. I LOVE to write while listening to music. I have a novel soundtrack that consists of Paramore, Muse, Kings of Leon, Eve 6, John Mayer and Lifehouse.

So, are you always going to print out each chapter, or keep it "green" and keep it in your computer?

Unfortunately, in order for me to edit and catch my mistakes, I have to print it. I hand around a copy to a few different people and have them proof for me in different ways- one will use red pen, one will use a few post-its and another will use pencil. Then I go through and make my notes in the margin with a blue pen, add my revisions to the chapter- on computer, and call it good. I keep it green whenever I can, though!! :) You can't see it, but my character journal and binder and both by www.greenroomeco.com, 100% recycled!
