We’ve all heard about the devastating chain of events that took place on the Samoan Islands. We’ve seen the destruction that the 20-foot waves caused in only a few minutes, leaving 3,000 parents and children homeless and over 9,000 in need of assistance.
Jack and Carol Batchelor, of Eugene, Oregon, had relocated earlier this year to restore a beach front resort in Samoa. They experienced the tsunami first hand and lived to tell of their heart wrenching experience. The resort they were restoring was completely washed out. 80 percent of their employees did not survive. You can read a full article about their narrow escape in the Register Guard.
Here in the Northwest there have been countless efforts to collect money and send supplies to the people in need. This past Monday University of Oregon athletes, who have family in Samoa or American Samoa, organized a collection center to accept non-perishable food items and supplies. The response was overwhelming with community member’s wanting to do their part.
There’s nothing greater than the gift of love and opportunity. If you’re asking yourself how you can help, here are several options available to you:
All branches of Northwest Community Credit Union are accepting donations to assist Carol and Jack Batchelor with their rebuilding efforts.
Papa’s Pizza is hosting a fundraiser at their Springfield location: 4011 Main St. on October 20th.
Sponsor a child affected by the Tsunami by going to World Vision.
