The Register…..

It’s my 2 year anniversary since I broke up with my debit card.  I LOVED my debit card however I was using it too much and took it for granted.  It was a one-way street.  I used it and it gave me nothing but a false sense of feeling that I had money.  I was just too darn preoccupied to write down every purchase and that in turn led me to “over spend”.  In fact here’s what my check register looks like:

That’s awful I know.  Hey, just because I work at a financial institution doesn’t mean I’m “St. Finance” and keep a register.  I’m just too distracted by the 6 year old doing the potty dance or the guy behind me in line who’s eyes are digging into me because he’s in a mad rush to write anything down.  I did however need to come up with a solution because it’s unacceptable to be totally irresponsible in regards to my finances.  Other things yes; finances no. So I went back to basics.  I now only have cash; cold hard cash.  It helps me stick to a budget and keep me on track with exactly how much money I really have. I give myself an allowance each week (don’t laugh) and if I know I can’t go over it then I won’t.  I leave money in my account that will pay my bills for the month and take the rest out; that’s my spending money.  I divvy it up for how much per week I have to spend and keep the rest in a safe place waiting for next week.  (Where you ask do I keep it?  NICE TRY!  I’ll never tell!)  I have to say so far it works very well for me.  It’s pretty elementary but it seriously works.  Try it.  And because my curiosity gets the best of me let me know….do you use a register?  If you don’t how do you keep your account balanced?  Or do you? Its ok we’re all friends here…

I am a little (or a lot) OCD when it comes to my finances. I have 3 check books. Each one is balanced on Saturday morning over a cup of coffee and the peace of a quiet morning. I write my purchases down when I make them and if I am feeling rushed or hurried I tuck the receipt in my register to await my next Saturday morning. I look at my accounts (all 3 checking and 2 savings) every day. I know most people are not nerotic like me and they shouldn't, I am sure it is not healthy. There must be a happy medium......

Jen, I am the total opposite of you. I find that I blow through cash like it is nothing, but if I have to pull out my debit card, it makes me think. Mostly because I found I was literally nickel and diming myself. Small purchases, they were nothing. But, they add up! With my card, I always think if it is worth the hassle of buying something so small with plastic. And, thanks to the miracle that is online banking, I can check my balances anytime and I don't overdraw my account.

Dana- you're such a finance genious. You are the poster child for what a financially responsible person shoudl be like. If I had 3 checking accounts I'd probably have to be OCD like you as well. Phew. Kudo's to you for keeping them on track!

Brian- I am so NOT surprised you love online banking you techy you! My problem was I'd check my balance and go spend what I saw my balance was. Ugh. Silly girl that balance doesn't have your last 10 debit purchases yet! Gotta love the lesson....

I have to admit I use neither....I use my credit card and then pay it in full each month, or at least most months. My OCD is usually in entirely different areas. Definitely can not do the cash thing; I remeber being really young and putting $20 in my sock while I went on the rollor coaster and when I was done it was there not more. This means Tiffany+cash=broke.

I like the cash idea... however, I feel like I would go thru it faster than if I was using my debit card. I noticed that when I was 16 and was getting gas... Back then kids, it only took $15 to fill up my tank. But if I had a $20, I would find ways to spend that extra money on gum or a soda or whatever... Once I got the debit card, it was just the gas and nothing else. The only way I stick to a budget is to just not have the money. I have an account at another bank that I send money to each paycheck. I don't have a card to that account and there are no branches in town, so I have to ACH the money if I ever need it. Then I basically just live paycheck to paycheck with the rest of my money after the bills are paid. I really should plan out a budget for my 'spending money'... Hmmm :)
