Buyers (Almost) Remorse

In life we are faced with many opportunities to spend money, buy things and then endure the inevitable buyer’s remorse. Recently I was looking at possibly purchasing a house in my beautiful hometown of Eugene, which would be my first time ever doing such an impressively adult thing. Since the rates are at a record low and the government is offering such lovely tax credits, it seemed almost crazy not to buy, and I hate being thought of as a crazy person. Looking into it and going through the process was fun and easy, but I noticed I just wasn’t really feeling much about it at all. I had sort of an apathetic, lackadaisical approach to real estate if you will. So I called my dad and asked him what he thought and he gave me some of the best advice I have ever received…so good in fact that I will now share it with all the world…

He said, “Never buy anything unless you are really passionate about it, then you never even have to make a decision. Be it a box of crackers or a house, only buy what you really, really want and cannot stop thinking about. This way you won’t ever regret it.”

I can not agree with this more! The more I thought about what he said, the more I saw how true it was. We are all consumers, whether we resent that moniker or not, it still fits. The thing we need to remember is that we alone control what we choose to be consumers of. With this thought I realized that I am not ready to buy a house yet and I shouldn’t do so simply because it is the best time to buy one in probably the past 60 years. I should wait until it is something I am really passionate about, something I just cannot stop thinking about and dreaming of. For now, Trader Joe’s Sesame Seaweed Rice Balls will have to do as they are simply delicious…

I love this! What great advice from dad. I, too have made purchases because someone told me I should (usually involving clothes and my daughter's advice). I almost always regret it.

Those sesame seaweed rice balls are very tasty... I am glad you shared your story with us. It shows that one path does not fit all!

Very good advice!! I do have to admit though passion is very important but it is still good to slow down and evaluate beyond that. I was VERY passionate about my house when I was buying it, and in many ways still am. The only thing I regret is the price tag since the market dropped the bottom out from under the housing prices not long after.
