O, A, B, +, –, ?

I recently found myself wondering what my blood type was, it seemed like something you should know about yourself and for some reason I had no idea.  So I headed to the local blood bank, got my finger pricked, was told I am B Positive and sent on my way.  With this new found knowledge I decided to find out what this meant to me exactly and what the facts are behind this whole blood type stuff anyway.  Here is just the tip of some of the amazing facts I unearthed…

blood-drop   Blood Type O is humanity’s oldest blood type, dating 30,000 years ago. The O actually stands for Old.  This blood type has a digestive system that is like that of its ancestors and thrives on lots of meat.  O Negative blood types are the universal donors, meaning they can donate to anyone no matter what their type is.  O is also the most common of all blood types.

blood-drop Blood Type A stands for “Agrarian” and dates back to around 20,000 years ago.  This type is from the farmers and less “barbaric” people and should lean towards a vegetarian diet.  Type A Positive is extremely common, with 1 out of every 3 people having it.

blood-drop Blood Type B is slightly newer, dating back only about 10,000 years.  Apparently they should avoid eating chicken as there is an agglutinating lectin in chicken that could cause several unpleasant conditions, such as a stroke.  Type B is much less common than O or A, with B Negative being fairly rare at 1 out of every 67 individuals.

blood-dropThe very newest and fourth kind of blood type is type AB, which manifested about 1,000 years ago.  AB is very rare with AB Negative only showing in 1 out of every 167 people.  This is the only blood type that has formed from the consistent union of A and B blood types.  They suffer the positive and negative traits of their parent blood types and should therefore aim for a vegetarian diet and lots of calming exercise.

blood-dropIn Japan they regard blood types as extremely important and use them to determine personality traits.  According to this theory people with my blood type are the individualists and we find our own way in life.  I am prone to agree with that one.

Everything I have learned about blood types, diet, personality traits and health concerns thus far has rung very true for me.  I am amazed that more people aren’t aware of their blood type or the effect it can have on our lives in general.  Does any of this ring true for all of you?  Please share, I would love to know!

I just found out my type, B Negative, after donating at Northwest Community's annual blood drive in July. What fascinates me is how genetics affect blood type, with A and B antigens being dominant over O, and positive being dominant over negative. My parents are AB+ and O+, so both must have carried the (-) as recessive genes, and I wound up getting the recessive (-) from each parent.

I was also interested in how rare B- is...less than one percent of the population.

No chicken? Does that mean we get to have extra steak instead?

Kristen,

Yes! We B's get steak to our hearts desire, just no chicken sadly. We are also supposed to avoid wheat and corn. Interesting isn't it?

Isn't this fascinating??!!!!

I have to say that following (mostly) the Blood Type Diet as described by Dr. Peter D'Adamo has made quite a difference in my life. I feel better and can absolutely tell a difference when I eat "off Blood Type".

FYI: Dr. D'Adamo's initial book on the subject is Eat Right For Your Type.

He has several websites dedicated to the subject.

Interesting stuff, I didn't know where the blood type letters came from. If you want to know your blood type, a perfect opportunity is available to do that on September 30th from 7:30 to 11:30 when the credit union will be hosting a blood donation drive at the Gateway branch. Come join us and find out your blood type, personality traits and how barbaric you really might be!

I'm AB-, but I've found that a diet rich in BACON actually works best for me... hehe!

In all seriousness- I'm not suprised that I'm supposed to be a veggie- I've always had high cholesterol levels. Thanks for the interesting info! I really look forward to donating on the 30th!

Erin,

Wow you have the rarest of all blood types, less than 1% of the population has blood like yours! Good for you for donating, it is really important with that type to be sharing about it. :)

Wow! Personality from blood type. Well this is what the site says about us O people....

Type O's are outgoing, and very social. They are initiators, although they don't always finish what they start. Creative and popular, they love to be the center of attention and appear very self confident.

Oh my gosh... Did my mom write that? It's freaky!
