Poetry SLAM!

We here at TSNW have decided to celebrate the seasons in a creative and enthusiastic way...by having our very own Poetry Slam of sorts.

We have TWO tickets to give away for the live Halloween performance of the Rocky Horror Show at the Actors Cabaret in downtown Eugene:

rocky_horror

Submit for our judgment your finest poem or haiku about Autumn, Halloween, etc. and we will choose the very best one.  As a team we will select the top five most Autumn-liscious poems this Friday, October 9th and those five will be given a second chance at greatness.  The ultimate winner will be declared on Friday, October 16th and awarded tickets to a most excellent show!  So with that juicy carrot dangling over your heads I challenge all of you lyrical gangsters out there to present your creative offerings to us.  As turnabout is indeed fair play I present my version of an Autumnal Ode to all of you..

At long last summer is officially over,

Time for Autumn to spread it’s wings.

This brings about all sorts of changes,

And more than a few of my favorite things…

I love the streets all lined with leaves,

Like cornflakes spilled and swept aside.

I love the rain as it pours down,

When those not from here run and hide.

Fall means a drive to Lone Pine Farms

To brave the big corn maze at night;

Buy some pumpkins and carve them up

To give the local kids a fright…

For Halloween it’s the Rocky Horror Show

At the Actors Cabaret downtown.

TV will show “It’s the Great Pumpkin”

With the one and only Charlie Brown.

From there it’s on to November,

To colder weather and turkey days.

Trying to be with friends and family,

And giving thanks in our own ways.

So for all of you who miss the sunshine,

Who miss the sweat, the heat, the burn,

I say try to enjoy the autumn,

After all…you had your turn.

a haiku for the fallen season

Sun’s glow starts climb as

Grey mist gives way to light, but

Day too soon will fade

A Haiku for the Poetry Contest:

Flip-flops return to the closet,

Every color imagined flutters under our boots.

Our feet have found Autumn.

Ode to Alaskan Autumn

Tundra turns crimson.

Behold a dying fire.

Light fades before day is done.

Frost blankets the rocky ground

In a frigid kiss.

Northern Autumn bids welcome

The season of night.

Falling Endlessly

Leaves hit the earth so softly

Where they will slumber

Summer is Sleeping

Autumn frolicks in the Air

Winter is Awake

My very own Haiku, yes, from me to you:

Fair weather be gone!

No more mowing the front lawn!

Its truth I speak, not a Con!

Fall air smells so brisk,

Cooling my face as I walk,

Sipping warm Coffee...

Haunted corn mazes

Hot cider, chilly night air

Autumn has fallen

Sunshine on my face

Cool wind breezing through my hair

Crispy leaves falling

Once upon a midnight dreary...

No, no, no. That has already been used.

It was a dark and stormy night...

Again, been done.

How 'bout this...?

In the months of Fall,

When I think I seen it all;

Along comes a day,

That takes my breath away.

The night before was cold,

To get out of bed, I must be bold.

When my feet touch the floor,

I crawl back in bed for a little more.

As I brave the morning,

My mind screams out a warning!

Beware, Beware, Beware!

As I look out the window and stare.

All is calm and all is bright,

Why should this day give me a fright?

Once more I desire,

To stay by the fire.

I dress fairly warm in my clothes,

Long pants, a jacket, and socks for my toes.

I prepare for the walk to work,

The smile becomes a smirk.

I step out with door without a glance,

To brave the day, I will chance.

Once more into the fray,

But my breath is suddenly taken away.

Oh brr, oh drat!

I forgot my hat.

I don't want the tickets (if I were to win), but I just want to share my most fave poem that I've written about Autumn.

***********************************

"Twilight Sleep"

The mountains seem to be breathing

slowly this time of year, their ridges

in the horizon becoming craggy profiles,

sharp noses and chin, small lips.

I can almost feel them exhale.

An elderly woman takes her pulse

on the bus and I think I know how she feels.

We are all trying to snatch

up the last blocks of light that burn

on the sides of brick buildings

and cast cold shadows of trees

on sidewalks. All this chilly

beauty makes me shiver. I'm feeling

hibernation tendencies. I want to burrow

underground and sleep, curled up in a ball

until the winds turn warm again.

Second entry: (BTW fabulous poems everyone!)

The sun is setting on this crispy autumn day,

Bright colors of orange are heading my way.

The wind is roaring as it comes to greet,

Brown leaves are crunching underneath my feet.

Everything is changing all around,

Pumpkins are plump above the ground.

I head inside, and feel the heat...

The aroma of coco smells so sweet.

I cozy up with a blanket, and close my eyes...

Dreaming of bright stars that fill the skies.
