Whine Flu

I have been out sick for the past eight days with a terrible flu, not sure if it was the swine flu, but a flu nonetheless.  Coughing, sneezing, feverish, exhausted, sore body, sickness…flu.  One thing I can tell you about being an adult, especially an adult who doesn’t have any parents within a three hour drive of my apartment, is that it is just awful when you are sick.  All I want when I am sick is to whine and moan to someone and have them baby me and take care of my every whim and demand.  That doesn’t sound like too much to ask, does it?  I didn’t think so, either.

Since I am now a thirty year old woman, I had to take care of myself throughout this awful illness, as I’m sure some of you will have to do should you become victims of this disease.  I am incredibly lucky that my boyfriend and some of my close friends helped me with this, but they all had to keep going to work, much to my dismay, so I was left to fend for myself.  So here is some of my most sage advice:

cartoon_house_st5 Stay Home.  I cannot stress this one enough.  I hate staying home sick, I get bored; I get cabin fever, I just hate it.  None of that matters though when it comes to the health of the rest of your community.  Stay home.  Sign up for Netflix and get comfy.

water Water, water, water.  This bug is ultra dehydrating, so pour that magic liquid down your throat at every possible turn.  I’m pretty sure I can drink water in my sleep mow.

bed Rest.  Stay in your bed and sleep or lie down as much as you can.  I am still tired just typing this and cannot wait to get back in my lovely bed.  When you think you are all rested, rest for another two days.

Those are my three top choices for what you should do to take care of yourself.  Now this is a simple little list, but I promise if you stay home, rest and stay hydrated you will be okay.  That is of course if you are a reasonably healthy adult who isn’t pregnant, etc.  Also, soup is always a good move, as is hot tea (pumpkin spice is my recent favorite), vitamins galore and the number one thing you can do for yourself:  Keep your spirits up.  I found that having a positive attitude through this made me feel much better.  Then it promptly exhausted me and I had to take a nap, but I digress.

Any other tips or pearls of wisdom you can share with us would be much appreciated…

I feel your pain. I had my own 2 week flu that I just got over. I made the mistake of trying to do too much to soon and it just made it last for a week longer than necessary. I did manage to make it through 12 movies so I guess it wasn't a total loss :)

Jenny,

That is so funny, I must have watched 3 whole seasons of Law and Order! A totally painful way to get a "vacation" huh? :)

Pepto, Nyquil, heating pad, back scratcher, Ricola drops, Pedialyte, Sugar-free Jello, extra soft toilet paper, showering often, Vicks Vapo-rub on the bottom of your feet (for cough, yes it actually works!!), chapstick (remember to throw it away when you're done and DO NOT use the kind you need a finger to apply), favorite mellow music playing quietly while sleeping and excessive hand washing.

These are a few of my fav-or-ite things. I love having as much help as I can to get me by and make me feel a little more comfortable in the misery of MEH.
