The Longhouse at Lane Community College (LCC) is nearing completion. The building is up, but the inside needs some help. Like plumbing, interior finish and technology hook-ups. What with building codes, policies, union requirements, and cost of materials the amount of money needed to complete the project is well -extensive.

Longhouse's in general are a part of Native American culture dating back hundreds and hundreds of years primarily on the East and West Coasts. The construction, size and use of the Longhouse varied depending on geographical location, available resources and tribal culture/tradition. Generally speaking, Longhouses were often used as a community center, living space, social gathering space, council meeting space and a place to conduct ceremony. For the VERY basics on Native American Longhouses go here or here.
The LCC Longhouse will provide students and community members a place to gather for ceremony, social events, classes and a place to teach language via distance learning.
The Longhouse Committee will be hosting tours of the Native American Longhouse on Saturday, October 3, 2009 from 10:00am to 2:00pm.
