Choice is an amazing option in this country of ours. We are blessed with the ability to make decisions based on several available options. Often times, choice boils down to sending a message with your money.
I ran across this YouTube video of a statement President Obama made yesterday.
I have been so upset with the way the bailout money has been used, especially by Banks. All the bonuses, profits and deflection of responsibility… disgusting. I am not an economist, nor do I profess to have an extensive knowledge of our financial system. But I have a pretty good nose and when something smells fishy to the tune of billions of dollars, I tend to pay attention. And say things like - “Hey, that smells fishy!” I feel like I am owed an explanation of how these big banks can afford all the … extravagance. Obama’s proposal seems to make sense. Perhaps there will be some accountability after all.
This post was not intended to be a political statement. Rather, a statement about choice. At the turn of the year, the Huffington Post asked readers to take a pledge to “Move Your Money”. Move from large corporate banks to smaller community financial institutions. Wall Street to Main Street. The idea being that money talks. We were told that these big corporate banks were “to big to fail” without taking the economy with them. Yet, they continued to practice questionable financial responsibility when handed large sums of bailout money. The Move Your Money campaign is a choice, a vote for responsible, sustainable financial practices. When enough people protest the way money is being used by the big bank, perhaps the big bank will be motivated to change some business practices.
The Huffington Post falls short in their advice as to the available options for where to move your money. The original post doesn’t mention Credit Unions at all. Since then there has been an update to include Credit Unions as an option and the comments on the post have many messages about the benefits of Credit Unions. So, if you haven’t already, consider moving your money and while you are looking for a place to relocate, do check out your local Credit Union as an option.
