Recently, I watched MTV’s new show The Buried Life. I think it brought up a great point; if we are faced with death we find a sudden urge to do things, to live and experience life. But if we have an entire life to live, do we lose that same passion and that same desire to really experience life? I think it’s important for us to think about our life before we come to a point where we don’t have the opportunity to live it. What do you want to do? What do you want to experience? The way I think about it is if you reach the end of your life, is there going to be something that you wish you had done? If there is, then why not make an effort to do it while you’re capable. Sometimes the daily grind of life can make time slip away, can make our dreams slowly fade into a state that is unfathomable and forgotten. We only get one shot right? Why not make sure you achieve what you really want to do. I understand their are limitations, and at times a distinct separation between what we want and what we can actually attain, but wouldn’t it be a shame to go a whole lifetime without any conscious effort to live the experiences you’ve dreamt up. Perhaps death is far away and perhaps it’s right around the corner, but in either case let’s not let our time slip away.
I’ve started my own list of things I want to do before I die. Here’s just a few…
1) Run a marathon.
2) Play the drums in front of a crowd of more than 2,000 people.
3) Jump in a pool with a full tuxedo on.
4) Bike from one Italian village to another.
5) Learn how to surf.
6) Drive across America.
7) Write a book.
8) Community work in Africa.
9) Coach a baseball team.
10) Participate in an Iron Man.
11) Live in a French village.
12) Kayak in a South American jungle and go off a waterfall at least 15 ft tall.
I think it’s important to realize that you have dreams and so does everyone else. Help yourself attain them, help others grab a hold of theirs. Life is precious, enjoy it!
